The Tunnel! / The Prize!

It's Bob Powell vs. Jack Sparling in the final two tales from the May 1953 issue of Tomb of Terror #9. Sparling unwittingly became the THOIA "Spotlight Artist" this month with multiple posts, and something tells me we might see more Powell next month! Hope everyone enjoyed The Harvey Horrors of August!

I am continually amazed and overjoyed at the Sparling of this pre-code era. Fine as cherry wine.

Long before I knew their names, the first four comics artist to so impress my young mind that I could recognize their styles were Dick Sprang ("the good Batman artist" in my young mind), Wayne Boring ("the good Superman"), Frank Springer ("the Ghost Stories artist") and Jack Sparling ("the Outer Limits artist"). For nearly 50 years I've carried memories of panels and stories that Sparling drew for Dell's Outer Limits and Gold Key's Mighty Samson series. I've been a fan of his for many years and am VERY grateful that you allowed me to see so much of his pre-code work this month. Thanks!

That's some amazing gore at the end. Eee.

I love all the titles that are simply "The (noun)!" An old girlfriend and I laughed ourselves silly about "The Hive!"

Wow, the final panel of 'The Prize!' was surprisingly grisly.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more of Bob Powell's prowess next month. He's one of my favorite pre-code artists.

It's been my honor to give Jack Sparling some extra air time here at THOIA this month, and next month we'll see some more from Harvey though I'll be mixing in some other publishers too.

Got a request, a suggestion, or a submission--- drop me a line, I'd love to hear from you. And as always, thanks for the comments!

None of this would happen to me. I'm a claustrophobic wuss who avoids tunnels like the plague, and my idea of mountaineering is a nice hike followed by a night spent in a cabin! Oh sure, I might be murdered by a vengeful ghost or zombie, but I wouldn't meet the fate of these unfortunates.
